“Who is Leviathan?,” Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) asked a captured criminal on last week’s “Agent Carter.”
“Not who,” he replied cryptically. “What?”
Three episodes into the retro Marvel TV series, and the central mystery is indeed shaping up to be: what exactly is Leviathan?
Very little has been revealed. We know it’s some sort of evil organization. We know it was out to steal Howard Stark’s weapons. We know that the group’s agents have been rendered mute by having their voice boxes cut out. We know that many people, including hardened criminals, are terrified of Leviathan.
But what is Leviathan’s master plan? The comic books might offer a few hints.
In the Marvel publishing universe, Leviathan debuted in a 2010 issue of “Secret Warriors,” a series starring Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson in the Marvel cinematic universe).
The organization was born post-World War II in the Soviet Union. Think of it like an Eastern Bloc Hydra, the villainous group from “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”
Leviathan involved placing 100,000 of Russia’s best soldiers in deep freeze, to be thawed out when needed. There was also an element involving alien technology that could create super soldiers, sort of like Communist Captain Americas.
It’s unclear how much of this storyline, if any, will be used on “Agent Carter.” One thing we do know is that Leviathan agent Leet Brannis was discovered on Tuesday’s episode to have been a former Soviet soldier who had been declared dead two years before his actual death at the hands of Agent Carter. That information seems to gibe with Leviathan using of disappeared soldiers in some way.
